Lorde, aka 17-year-old New Zealand singer Ella Yelich-O'Connor, follows her surprise smash hit "Royals" with another melodic glimpse into teenage life. The "Team" video finds the pop songstress in a dark tropical underworld, singing her lungs out two teen boys in a parent-free wasteland engage in a bizarre initiation ceremony. The offbeat concept came to Lorde in a dream, and she teamed with Young Replicant (wise choice) to bring the vision to life.
"This video was borne from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was Queen," Lorde said on Facebook. "I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn't need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger."
Lorde's Pure Heroine LP is out now on Lava/Republic.
