Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek has been transforming waste materials into distinctive furniture since long before sustainability became the zeitgeist it is today. But while the reduce-reuse-recycle approach is central to his practice, Hein Eek's work is more nuanced than that. "It’s not just about recycling, it’s about a respect for the materials," he says.

This low bucket seat, from Hein Eek's Scrapwood collection, is a classic armchair made entirely from recycled wood collected near his studio in Eindhoven, Netherlands. With a basic form constructed from artfully arranged planks of reclaimed wood, each piece is totally unique. Inspired by the classic bucket seat, the chair is available in two finishes: high gloss or "fixated," in which the wood is left unpainted and finished with two coats of a transparent water based lacquer.
