Radiant Drawings of Riverbeds by Ester Roi

  • Posted by SHFT on July 26, 2013 in Art
  • The overhead sight of water flowing over rocks is a lovely visual treat, here made even more beautiful by SoCal artist Ester Roi. Working in and around her studio in San Juan Capistrano, Roi studies the way water interacts with natural elements like rocks and flowers to produce abstracted representations of the rippling, flowing effect. To do so, she uses pencils, crayons, and oil pastels on her invention, the Icarus Drawing Board, a heated board on which wax-based materials soften and melt to create the gradations and dissolving hues that you see above.

"Water transforms everything it touches," she writes, "hard lines become soft, warm colors cool, solid shapes break down into parts. Realism evolves into abstraction and the ordinary becomes extraordinary. The interplay between these realms is an endless source of inspiration for me."
