Young, up-and-coming Iranian photographer Mohammadreza Mirzaei explores meta territory in The Encounters, a series of pictures of people taking pictures. Shot from an aerial perspective, the tourists in Mirzaei's images act less as commentary about tourist culture than as graphical elements that complete the photos. Which isn't surprising, given that the Tehran-based photographer pursued graphic design before taking up photography. Nevertheless, there is certainly some commentary to be found, as Tim Clark, the editor of 1000 Words, has noted:
"What emerges is the idea that people seem locked into their insatiable craving to take pictures while on holiday more so than the actual experience of the spectacle itself."
