Mark Jupiter: Green by Design

  • Posted by SHFT on March 20, 2013 in Design
  • With roots in New York City woodworking that run four generations deep, Mark Jupiter comes by his profession honestly. Today, the Brooklyn-based furniture maker's experiments in reclaimed wood design are earning him fans all over the country.

Apartment Therapy recently paid Mark's DUMBO showroom a visit to share some ideas on his work and how sustainability informs it. He says that it was his experience building a timber frame home in the Catskills that led him down the path he's on now, creating unique furniture pieces from salvaged materials. For Mark, the singular narrative that lies behind each piece of reclaimed wood is as attractive as the material itself:

"Whether its on the floor constructed from the ancient Redwood of 150-year-old New York City water towers, extinct Heart Pine taken from the old Brooklyn sugar refinery, and equally rare spalted Elm from trees toppled by the Brooklyn tornado of 2011. The stories go on and on.”
