Katrien Vermeire: Godspeed

  • Posted by SHFT on December 24, 2012 in Photography
  • Belgium's Katrien Vermeire traveled to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee to capture these mesmerising images of fireflies lighting up the forest at night. Using long exposures, Vermeire was able to express the paths taken by fireflies in bright yellow stripes. The Godspeed series required plenty of patience, in the sense that Vermeire had to wait, totally still, for the fireflies to light up simultaneously.

"You can see the fireflies only a few weeks a year for a few hours a night," she explains. "The fireflies in Godspeed flash synchronously; after a few seconds of complete darkness, they emit all light all together in a large wave motion."

    Wow.
