John Kerry to Pursue Climate Treaty

  • Posted by SHFT on January 5, 2014 in Politics
  • No one can question John Kerry's ambition. Already in the process of destroying Syria's chemical weapons, crafting a nuclear agreement with Iran and brokering a peace deal between Israel and Palestine, the Secretary of State announced last week that he aims to pursue a global climate treaty in 2015.

    The New York Times reports:

His goal is to become the lead broker of a global climate treaty in 2015 that will commit the United States and other nations to historic reductions in fossil fuel pollution.

...As a result of midlevel talks Mr. Kerry set up to pave the way for a 2015 deal, the United States and China agreed in September to jointly phase down production of hydrofluorocarbons, greenhouse gases used in refrigerators and air-conditioners.

The Kerry announcement represents another sign that the Obama administration aims to make significant progress on climate change in its second term. The EPA put forth new rules in September that effectively ban the construction of new coal-fired power plants.

Can Kerry's global treaty come to fruition? The odds are long; previous attempts to reach agreements have failed (including in Copenhagen in 2009 where Kerry was involved), and even if a deal is reached, it would still have to ratified by the US Senate.
