House of the Rising Sun

  • Posted by on October 5, 2010 in Energy
  • Last month, Bill McKibben (author of "Eaarth") and 350.org tried to get solar panels installed on the White House. They were quietly rebuffed by the White House and we thought that was it.

Not so. Yesterday the Department of Energy announced that solar panels and a solar water heater will be installed at the presidential mansion by next spring. The announcement, which comes just in time for 350.org's 10/10/10 Global Work Party climate solutions event, follows President Obama's recent comments restating his commitment to climate change.

"The White House did the right thing, and for the right reasons: They listened to the Americans who asked for solar on their roof, and they listened to the scientists and engineers who told them this is the path to the future," said McKibben in a statement. "If it has anything like the effect of the White House garden, it could be a trigger for a wave of solar installations across the country and around the world."
