Fisker Karma Hybrid Goes into Production

  • Posted by Mitchell Flexo on March 27, 2011 in Transportation
  • California-based Fisker Automotive made a big splash at the 2008 North American International Auto Show with the Karma, a sleek gas-electric hybrid. Now the company has announced that the plug-in hybrid will start  rolling off the assembly line next month.

The Karma's has a 50-mile electric-only range, much like Chevy's popular Volt. But that's where the similarities end. The speedy Karma has two electric motors that give it an equivalent 402 horsepower and a top speed of 124 mph. After the electric batteries are drained, a turbocharged 2.0 liter gas engine acts as a generator to recharge the batteries and give the car 98 mpg. The first year will see 7,000 produced, at an American price tag of $95,900, with eligibility for the $7,500 tax credit.
