Epicurious: SHFT Mobile Kitchen Classroom

  • Posted by Peter Glatzer on October 29, 2012 in Food
  • SHFT Mobile Kitchen Classroom is a new nonprofit organization that provides high school students in New York City with the opportunity to learn basic cooking skills and prepare healthy, affordable, and delicious meals.

Under the effort, SHFT will operate a fully-equipped, mobile teaching kitchen that will travel to schools, health fairs, and other sites in order to teach about food, nutrition, and cooking. The mobility of our kitchen classroom will also allow students to connect with the broader community through cooking demonstrations and other food-focused events.

At Epi-Log, Adrian was interviewed about the initiative and about his interest in sustainable food:

Food is obviously important to you. You've ridden along with aid workers to feed the homeless, you've started your own wine label, you promote sustainable food, and now your SHFT Mobile Kitchen Classroom is educating kids on cooking and eating in a healthy way.

Why is food such a driving concern for you?

Food has always been important to me, but I've focused on it a lot more in the past year or so. It is a simple way to bring people together, and can be a great community builder. Plus, food is the building block to all of life.

With SHFT Mobile Kitchen Classroom, we are bringing a teaching kitchen to high schools to empower students to care for themselves and for others through lessons in healthy cooking and gardening. I can't think of a more compelling and fun way to teach kids how to take care of themselves, their families, and the environment. Especially with high school students, there are a million different reasons for them to get involved--maybe they want to impress a girl and learn how to cook a meal, or meet one of our guest chef teachers. It is a way to get them to become active contributors in our society, not just passive consumers, and teach them about health independence.
