An extensive new report published by Greenpeace alleges that Koch Industries is the single largest funder of the climate denial industry, claiming that the privately-held corporation controlled by the billionaire Koch brothers is "a financial kingpin of climate science denial and clean energy opposition."
Koch Industries is the second-largest privately-held company in the United States, with annual revenues over $100 billion. From its base in Wichita, Kansas, the company and its susbsidaries are involved in everything from oil refining, ranching, mining, chemicals, fertilizer production, and pulp and paper.
The report claims that Koch Industries has spent over $48.5 million since 1997 to fund more than 40 organizations either directly or indirectly involved in denying climate science and opposing clean energy.
The report also contains several case studies outlining Koch's primary role in the climate denial machine. In one, it's claimed that at least twenty Koch-funded organizations were involved in the dissemination of the "ClimateGate" story about supposed malfeasance by climate scientists, claiming that that stolen emails prove a “conspiracy” of scientists that casts doubt on the scientific consensus regarding climate change.
