BBC Earth: Life Is

  • Is there anything Katie Couric can’t do? First her short skirts pushed her to the top of the ratings of The Today Show. Then she took over the anchor desk at the CBS Evening News and almost pushed it right off the air. Don’t worry, she caused just enough controversy to bring her right back around in the ratings. And now she has her own web show called @katiecouric.com. And it’s a real treat to watch.

If you haven’t already guessed, I’m not the biggest Couric fan myself. However, despite my natural aversion to “America’s Sweetheart”, I actually think her web series is quite good. Last week’s installment, which featured former FDA Commissioner and author of The End of Overeating, Dr. David Kessler, and Fast Food Nation author Eric Schlosser, shed some bright light on food policy including anti-biotic use in agriculture, the calibration of flavor additives and GMO’s – no thanks to Couric’s expertise on this last one.

If you can get past her use of a few made up words like “gigundo” in reference to fast food sizes – now that’s journalism – and her tireless and labored references to tweets, the discussion is actually quite enlightening. Have a look for yourself!
