An Open Letter to Obama

  • Posted by SHFT on January 9, 2013 in Energy
  • The danger of slipping off the fiscal cliff has thankfully abated for now, but there's another, even more serious danger ahead: the climate change cliff.

Yesterday, nearly 70 environmental and health organizations sent a letter to President Obama [pdf] urging the president to take bold and decisive action against climate change.

“Dear Mr. President,” the letter begins. “Thank you for repeatedly raising the threat of climate change as you have outlined your priorities for your second term…. It is the great challenge of our time and our response will leave an historic legacy.”

Climate leadership in this time of crisis means not only moving ahead with clean energy, but also tackling the dirty. As the letter points out, we need to use existing Clean Air Act authority to reduce dangerous carbon emissions, particularly from power plants. And we need to say no to dirty fuels, beginning with rejection of a permit for the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.

Read the letter here. We endorse it heartily. Obama, let's do this.
